"How can I manufacture precision tools down to the micrometer?" This is the question Alexander Tress faces every day. As the department manager in the grinding shop at Hahnenkratt, he’s responsible for ensuring that all machines are checked and ready to go, and that various products move through each grinding stage with the utmost precision. What makes his job so special? The combination of leadership responsibility and hands-on involvement in daily operations.
Previously, Alexander worked at a large company, but it just wasn’t the right fit for him. "I didn’t want to be just a number," he recalls. Hahnenkratt’s strong reputation convinced him to apply as a grinder. From day one, he felt welcome on the team. "There’s something special about the way people interact here. It’s like a family, it’s honest, and you can tell: Everyone matters."
Alexander quickly impressed with his technical skill and strong sense of responsibility. “I proved that I have the machines under control—and that quality matters to me,” he says. At the end of 2022, he took over as head of the grinding department. Since then, he and his team have been pushing forward with quality assurance and the use of modern technologies. The switch to newer, more powerful CNC machines now allows for much more efficient production—a change that Alexander has actively helped shape.
Alexander is especially passionate about working on dental products, as real precision down to the micrometer is crucial here. At Hahnenkratt, a product doesn’t just leave production—it goes through multiple inspections. “A root post is processed at least three times before it’s finished with us. That’s the only way to ensure no stage of quality is compromised.” The interaction between departments is also key: “Communication here is just great! Everyone knows what needs to be done, and people work together as equals.”
Alexander has been involved in product development from the very beginning: “I’m there when new materials are tested or new manufacturing processes are tried out. That’s what makes the job so varied.” Together with colleagues from quality management, he participates in test runs and evaluates the suitability of new materials and manufacturing possibilities.
Something else he enjoys: There’s no such thing as standing still at Hahnenkratt. Because the industry is constantly changing, Alexander is eager to see what developments lie ahead for him and his team. With ongoing investments in cutting-edge technology, he feels well equipped for the future. But one thing is also crucial for him: the environment. “I just feel comfortable here. My work is recognized. And I know I can make a difference.” That motivates him day after day — as does his professional outlook. After all, his team is set to keep growing, with people who share his passion for precision and teamwork.
